Flintridge Fund: The Louisa Moseley Fine Arts Fund, established through a gift to the department by the Flintridge Foundation, provides money to Pomona junior and senior studio and art history majors to support projects that involve costs above and beyond the normal costs associated with a studio or art history class. Most often these projects are undertaken by juniors and seniors and relate to senior art projects or theses, but other types of proposals are also considered. Examples of projects funded include the creation of large sculptural works that require expensive materials like bronze, or travel to museums to visit exhibitions or to do research associated with a senior thesis. The purchase of textbooks or standard course materials is not funded.
To be eligible for this funding, you need to submit an application form which you can pick up from our Administrative assistant Bev Lopez in the department office. Basically, you have to describe your project and why you want to do it, and include a detailed budget. You must talk with a faculty member and obtain their signature before you submit your application to ensure that your budget is reasonable and that your description is as complete as possible. All of the applications are reviewed by a committee consisting of the chair of the department, an additional studio and art history professor, and a student. Grants normally range from $100 to $800.
Rembrandt Club Summer Travel Grant for Juniors: Each year the Rembrandt Club, founded in 1905 to support art at Pomona College, provides funding to allow a junior studio art and art history major to engage in a summer project. Past projects have included attendance at a ceramics studio workshop, a trip to New York to visit museums, in order to research a paper, and a trip to Japan to study at a Zen monastery. Applications for this grant are due in early April and require a statement of the intended project with a detailed budget.
The Department of Art History awards the Louisa Moseley Fine Arts Prize to an art history major who has written a senior thesis of outstanding quality and creativity.
The Pomona College Museum of Art offers internships to students in a variety of areas–e.g. researching the collection, preparing wall labels for exhibitions. The Career Development Office of Pomona College also works with students to place them in internships at various arts organizations throughout the Los Angeles area during the school year. Local museums also offer a variety of internship opportunities–e.g. at the Los Angeles Museum of Art, the Getty Museums, the Museum of Contemporary Art. Students should check the ‘News’ page on the department website for updates on available internships and summer research opportunities.
The Department of Art History hires workstudy students for a variety of tasks, from clerical work in the department office and scanning images for the Visual Resources Center to assisting faculty with their research.
