About our fellowships:

The Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Garden offers two summer fellowships for undergraduate or graduate students interested in American Studies, U.S. History, Museum Studies, Education, or Historic Preservation. Students participate in the daily work of a historic site, assisting the Museum’s Education and Curatorial staff with public programs and interpretation. Fellows complete an original research project related to the Museum’s interpretation of New York life (1826-1833.) The fellowship program, now in its twenty-eighth year, is funded by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. Fellows work full-time for nine weeks in June and July and receive a $2,750 stipend. Hours are 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, with occasional evenings for special events. Throughout the summer, Hearst Fellows:

• conduct original historical research related to collection objects, historic themes, or NYC history. Fellows present their research at the Fellows’ Symposium at summer’s end.

• participate in all aspects of the Museum’s two-week summer history camp program.

• conduct tours of the Museum’s period rooms and garden.

• assist with the Museum’s summer public programs.

• contribute to Museum operations.

The Museum interprets travel, leisure, work, and play in antebellum New York from 1826 to 1833 when the Mount Vernon Hotel operated as a day hotel. Built in 1799 as a carriage barn for a country estate, the building was converted in 1826 into a day hotel, a popular resort catering to New Yorkers and travelers seeking escape from the crowds and pollution below Fourteenth Street.

New York City and America were changing rapidly in the 1820s and 1830s. The Museum engages with issues familiar to New Yorkers then and now: immigration, race relations, work, getting ahead, and how to enjoy life. With over 35 public programs a year, the Museum offers many ways to discover the 1830s.

The Museum reaches over 25,000 visitors annually that reflect New York’s rich diversity.Our education programs draw upon the multiple intelligences of learners and emphasize experience-based learning, or learning-by-doing.

Application Procedures

Fellowship applications may be downloaded as a word document here or obtained via e-mail from education@mvhm.org.

To apply, students must submit the completed application form, a short essay explaining their interest in the fellowship, resume, and two letters of recommendation e-mailed from referees. All applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for both Spring and Fall of 2012.

Applications and references must be e-mailed to education@mvhm.org or faxed to the museum. Materials, including letters of recommendation, must be received by Friday, March 9, 2012.
